EPISODE 2 – ENTERING THE COVENANT

Opening

I did not expect this episode to feel the way it did. We went into the studio with a plan, two separate episodes covering Acts 2 and then Acts 8, 10, 11 and 19. What happened instead was something I can only describe as a wandering. A good one. The kind where you look up and realise you have covered more ground than you knew.

What We Explored

Dan and I began in the court of the Gentiles. One hundred and twenty believers, not just the twelve apostles, gathered together on the day of Pentecost. And something happened that none of them had ever experienced. The sound of a rushing wind. Tongues of fire resting on each of them. And then, all one hundred and twenty of them, speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Not some of them. Not the specially qualified ones. All of them.

Dan has a way of sitting with that detail until you really feel its weight. One hundred and twenty. The promise was not for an inner circle. It was for all flesh, as Peter quoted from Joel that same morning. What happened was the pattern, not the exception. It was Pentecost establishing what the normal experience of a covenant-keeping believer looks like.

And then, almost without planning it, we found ourselves moving through Acts together, following the thread of Holy Spirit reception from Jerusalem to Samaria to Caesarea to Ephesus. Acts 8, where Philip preaches and healings and miracles fill the city, and yet Peter and John still travel down specifically to pray for people to receive the Holy Spirit, because believing and being baptised in water was not the same thing as receiving. Acts 10, where Cornelius and his household receive the Holy Spirit before they are even baptised in water, and the Jewish believers standing there are astonished, because God will not be put in a box. Acts 11, where Peter uses that same astonishing moment as his entire defence for why the Gentiles are included. And Acts 19, back where we started the series, with Paul and the twelve disciples asking the same question all over again.

Dan said something in the middle of all of this that I want to sit with for a long time. When God does something four times in the same book, it is not coincidence. It is instruction.

A MOMENT THAT STAYED WITH ME

There was a moment in the recording where Dan paused and said something like, you see, Luke keeps coming back to it. And the way he said it made me realise that the repetition in Acts is not accidental literary structure. It is pastoral. God arranged for these four moments to be recorded so that no one could miss what He was saying. We just spent an hour letting it land.

SOMETHING TO SIT WITH

What is God saying to you through the pattern in Acts? Have you received what He has been offering across every chapter of that book?
